Mayumi-san’s specialty is arts and crafts.  She also provides a traditional Japanese basketry lesson in her studio.  Want to make your own unique basket?  Mayumi-san is an ideal person who would tell you how.

Forty years ago, Mayumi-san moved to Takayama, and founded a craft community, “Oak Village” with her friends. It was created with the goal of establishing a self-sufficient community focused on making local crafts as well as communing with nature. Her husband and she started a woodworking school that was the first school in Japan to emphasize forestry and environmental education in its curriculum.  Her basketry changed dramatically after a walk through the woods. Her work greatly utilizes and reflects nature. 
 
Mayumi-san is an open-minded person.  Not only making basket and playing shamisen, but just taking with her make your stay in Takayama special.
